About the Job

The LAPD Detective is a weary, sharp-eyed investigator from 1947 Los Angeles, carrying the weight of one of the city’s most infamous unsolved cases: the murder of Elizabeth Short, known to the press as The Black Dahlia. This character is grounded, observant, and haunted — not melodramatic, but deeply affected by what he has seen. He speaks directly to the audience as if reopening an old case file after years of silence, guiding them through post-war Los Angeles, the discovery in Leimert Park, the frenzy of the newspapers, the missing week, and the suspects who never quite added up. The role requires strong storytelling ability, emotional restraint, noir atmosphere, and the confidence to hold a room in an intimate immersive setting. The Detective should feel like someone who knows the city’s darkest corners and understands that in Hollywood, truth is often buried beneath headlines, ambition, and myth. Tone: Noir, haunted, intelligent, controlled, investigative. Performance Style: Direct address to audience, intimate storytelling, slow-burn tension. Approximate stage time: 15-minute monologue, with light audience interaction. Actor type: Must be comfortable performing in close proximity to guests.
